Collaborative Technology

Collaborative technology is a catchall term for software tools that aid in collaborative work. Related terms include groupware, meetingware, and electronic meeting systems (EMS). Group support systems (GSS) and computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) refer to software tools that aid collaborative work.

The products that make up this class of software tools differ slightly in perspective and approach. Among their strengths is the capability to promote participation through anonymity and to present immediate documentation. As discussed in my book Requirements by Collaboration, we highly recommend that you first hold a same time--same place, real-time meeting of the participants before using these tools. A face-to-face meeting facilitates trust and helps everyone agree how to maximize these tools.
